The Centre Gallery is pleased to announce our first summer show, We Must Be Blind by Josué Charles.

The artist is currently in his final year as an undergraduate majoring in Fine arts at University of South Florida. He is inspired by Picasso, who is a well-known artist due to his controversy and creativity. The Charles thinks his work serves Picasso’s philosophy, which is best explained by one of his famous quotes: “The world today does not make sense, so why should I paint pictures that do?” As artists we have a duty, and that is to capture and imitate what we see through our works. The artist seeks to capture what is unseen and then utilize subtlety of things making them to be seen. Charles’ records time in his works as it acts as a statement to those who will come to it at a later date. Pablo Picasso once asked “Are we to paint what’s on the face, what’s inside the face, or what’s behind it?” This is the question the artist refers to when he explains what he does and why he does it. Subtlety of things has fascinated Charles through how small aspects in our lives have been well-captured by art. It is therefore his aim to point such minor things and then share them with the viewers. He has always resulted not to be so open to the viewers and that explain why he has creates pieces in a curious way.

The artist believes there is much we can do with art that artists are not doing. This is why he is inspired by the Flint water tragedy. His hopes are to raise awareness and funding to help them through doing this exhibition. After reading about the deaths of the children and adults who died due to the infected water, he decided to represent them figuratively. There is nothing honorable about their death as they died from drinking water, which is one of the key elements to every human.
