The Centre Gallery at the University of South Florida is excited to announce Oozing Attitude by Brandon Geurks. The work explores the anxiety of being inside a body through the creation of ambiguous, shifting characters. These figures are perpetually caught in throes of transformation, contorting their flesh to serve as a disguise. However, their flesh has its own mindless desires, which it will act on. This conflict between intent and instinct is at the core of his body of work.

Geurks’ explore issues of identity in his work, particularly the acts of idealization and objectification. As these figures attempt to pass for social acceptability, they perform gender. While they occupy a tenuous third position, they are pressured to mold themselves into conformity.

All of his figures are struck with this question of assimilation, but they do not all respond in the same way. Some are better suited to disguise, using illustration as a cloak. Some are gooey and awkward, threatening to fall apart at any moment. Some choose to reject disguise altogether, purposefully fashioning their own culture through appropriated elements of others.

The artist is a painter and freelance illustrator who was born in Ohio. He got his Bachelors of Fine Arts at University of Central Florida in 2013.
