Tampa, FL (Jan. 25- Feb. 5, 2016)
The Centre Gallery at the University of South Florida will host ‘It is so because it’s always been so’ where visitors to the gallery will experience works in multimedia installation and video displays that explore techniques in video and animation. Edison Peñafiel presents a selection of his recent works largely influenced by a combination of personal and collective social experiences, as well as fantasy. This selection of works gives birth to surrealistic and paradoxical compositions that expose ideas of the conformism, and injustice.
The humanoid qualities of his sculptural works and video displays demonstrate an interest in representing and reproducing human experiences and struggles. The artist describes his works as follows:
“I make compositions that evoke irony and fantasy based on personal and collective social experiences. By abstracting environment and form, I want to expose the viewer to surreal social situations that does not seem far from our own.”
Peñafiel is a BFA student within Studio Art at the Florida International University in Miami. In 2015, he was awarded the Excellence Award from the FIU’s Student Government Association and was also the recipient of the FIU Arts Council Award in 2014. Recent notable exhibitions include the 6th and 7th Biennial Exhibition at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood 2013 and 2015, In this Moment and Manifest Destiny at Little Haiti Cultural Center in 2014 and 2015, and Be Inspired… at the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale in 2013.
