Held Together is a solo exhibition featuring the work of Jennifer Miller at the Centre Gallery. The artist is currently a third year Master of Fine Arts candidate at the University of South Florida Studio Arts Program.

Jennifer Miller has been both nationally and internationally recognized for her exploration of ceramics and mixed media sculpture. Her work includes abstract sculpture that explores materiality and aesthetics. Her combination of traditional and nontraditional ceramic techniques with mixed media allows her to deconstruct the materials creating a tension between concept and process.

Students and other members of the community have the opportunity to experience objects that questions the viewer’s perception of material. Tactics are employed to obscure the identity of the objects and materials that are included in the accumulative abstract compositions. Form, surface and color create a dialogue about the formal elements of sculpture and relationships to contemporary materials. The physical structures are tenuously held together until they are solidified in resin, capturing the fragility and vulnerability of the form. The viewer’s expectations of line and pattern are subverted by the imperfections of their application. The use of clay creates a connection to craft, to a superiority of and connection to the hand that contradicts the commercial and manufactured qualities of the materials. This subversion of uniformity and precision is a conversation that goes beyond the context of clay and speaks to the roles of commodities and objects.
