Tampa, Fla. (June 2015)
The Centre Gallery is proud to present “I step back to know you,” an exhibition featuring the ongoing collaborative project of Matthew Hotaling and Robert Dallas. We chose the title “I step back to know you” for its relation to our distinct collaborative process. Each artist works separately, consuming the work of the other to create a new image in a long sequence with no possible end.

This work speaks to the material notion of photography through the process of image generating. Each image renews the other, the photograph becomes a material for the next image. This series of images speak to the identity of the “mark”, virtual gestures and the body’s curation of the photograph. The project focuses on managing the illusion between reality and its own representation.

Matthew Hotaling is a recent MFA graduate and Robert Dallas is a 2nd year MFA candidate from Rutgers Mason Gross School of the Arts. Matthew Hotaling lives and works in Los Angeles, CA and Robert Dallas lives and works in the New York City area. Robert Dallas has shown previously at the Centre Gallery (A Requiem, June 2013) and multiple group shows. Matthew has shown at Rutgers University, Gowanus Loft in Brooklyn NY, Columbia University and this will be his first showing at the gallery.

DessART, Centre Gallery’s opening reception for this exhibit, will be held on June 15th from 12 – 1 p.m. accompanied with free dessert.

The reception for “I step back to know you” will be held from 7 – 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 25th, in the Centre Gallery.  The Centre Gallery is located on the second floor of the Marshall Student Center in room 2700, at 4202 E. IN HEAT by Gary Schmitt June 1-12

GarySchmitt_InHeat_FrontTampa, Fla. (June 2015) – From June 1st - June 11th , the Centre Gallery at the University of South Florida will host In Heat by Gary Schmitt.  Visitors to the gallery will encounter mixed media sculptures that welcomes the viewer to open interpretation of the works.

In Heat is the first solo exhibition to be shown by Gary Schmitt at the Centre Gallery.  The artist is a 3rd year Master of Fine Arts candidate in the University of South Florida Studio Arts program.

Gary Schmitt has been both nationally and internationally recognized for his exploration of sculpture and 2D media. His work is motivated by underground culture and psychoanalyzes perceptions of masculinity and its relationship to unbound freedom and the rebellious spirit.

In Heat includes multi-media sculptural work representing the final dregs of a dropout society developing its own system of values and beliefs. Motorcycle obsession, religion, sexuality, teenage anxiety, mid-life crisis and heavy metal music become a centerfold for critique and seduction.

Students and other members of the community have the opportunity to experience objects that express a do-it-yourself attitude while contrasting the commodification of cultural imagery. A nihilist approach fuels a muted color palette and aggressive material choices that embody failed mimicry and illusions of reality. The result of In Heat is a body of work that pushes trash to the level of high art and drags sophisticated concepts of the level of popular culture. Schmitt continues to research his studio practice in anticipation for his thesis exhibition this spring at the Contemporary Art Museum.

DessART, Centre Gallery’s opening reception for this exhibit, will be held on June 1st from 12 – 1 p.m accompanied with free dessert.

The reception for In Heat will be held from 7 – 9 p.m. on Monday, June 1st, in the Centre Gallery.  The Centre Gallery is located on the second floor of the Marshall Student Center in room 2700, at 4202 E. Fowler Ave., Tampa, Fla., and is free and open to the public.
