Heart Out by Kelly Boehmer

Tampa, Fla. (September 2013) – From September 16 through 27, the Centre Gallery at the University of South Florida will host Heart Out by Kelly Boehmer.  Visitors to the gallery will encounter artwork that is a chaotic visual overload with kitsch elements, used in an unexpectedly sincere way.

The sculptures of this show are inspired from cartoons, myths, and fairytales.  Using fabric as her primary medium, Boehmer represents fear, heartbreak, and death reduced to silly and magical scenes, involving pitiful creatures.  She also uses taxidermy, video monitors, glitter, and other media.  The sculptures are all sewn by hand with an aggressive, undefined stitch reconstructed from Boehmer’s old sculptures with new elements in order to create new narratives.  Her sculptures use seductive, bright colors and sensual shimmering textures in contrast to gory or repulsive details.

Boehmer received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Maryland Institute College of Art in 1999 and went on to graduate from the University of South Florida in 2006 with a Masters of Fine Arts.  In the future, she would love to do a residency abroad.

DessART, Centre Gallery’s opening reception for this exhibit, will be held on September 16 from 12 – 1pm.  The closing reception for Heart Out will be held from 7 – 9pm on Friday, September 27, in the Centre Gallery.  The Centre Gallery is located on the second floor of the Marshall Student Center in room 2700, at 4202 E. Fowler Ave., Tampa, Fla.  It is free and open to the public.  Gallery hours are11am to 5pm, Monday through Friday.
