“IT’S ABOUT TIME” Courtney Alexander & Estefania Velez June 29 – July 10

Tampa, Fla. – From June 29th to July 9th, the Centre Gallery at the University of South Florida will host It’s About Time by Estefania Velez and Courtney Alexander. Visitors to the gallery will encounter a raw sensory experience to navigate the artist’s world through mixed-media sculptures and paintings.

Albert Einstein once said, “The only reason for time is so that everything doesn’t happen at once.”  In the following works, Courtney Alexander and Estefania Velez explore time from different perspectives.  Estefania Velez is interested in theories of time and existence while Courtney Alexander explores linear time by researching the history of black female representation in art history.

Estefania Velez’s paintings are an exploration of time and loss and how multiple time frames and narratives can happen simultaneously in a painting or piece of art. Estefania executes this by overlapping the figure through the space of the painting, and by depicting the figure in movement with mixed line work and jarring color relations. Courtney Alexander attempts to dig into issues of duality, hyper sexuality, and self-awareness through historical representations. By comparison, it is a more personal dialogue which serves to create vulnerability and explore the complex nature of her existence.  Both techniques can be seen as conversation on very similar issues that form two varying perspectives.

Alexander is currently a senior student at USF majoring in studio art. Anticipating her graduation in the Fall of 2015, she plans to pursue a Masters in Fine Arts degree and use art as a platform to create raw and candid dialogue in the arena of body politics. In Its About Time Courtney Alexander uses large mixed media collages of the figure, as well as free standing sculptures. Estefania Velez graduated with her BFA degree from USF Spring 2015. She was accepted into Graduate school in NYC at Brooklyn College, and leaves to start her MFA Fall 2015. Velez plans on continuing the exploration of multiple time narratives including existence after death, by researching more physics journals and pushing mixed media techniques and color theories. In Its About Time Velez uses large paintings on canvas depicting multiple figures and fluorescent oil paint.
